Necrotizing sialometaplasia

Necrotizing sialometaplasia is a benign pathology which generally occurs on the palate. It is probable that this pathology is caused by ischaemia of a salivary gland, following local trauma. Clinically, necrotizing sialometaplasia is characterised by swelling which is covered by erythematous mucous which subsequently ulcerates, presenting a yellow-grey base; it is moderately painful. A definitive diagnosis is based mainly on biopsy and a histological examination. Generally no treatment is required to treat necrotizing sialometaplasia in that the lesions tend to reach a maximum size and heal by secondary intention within 6- 10 weeks. Of use, however, is a regenerative, antiseptic topical treatment.
