ULCER

a loss in epithelial strata, extending to sub-epithelial connective tissue. Compared to erosion, an ulcer does not typically heal spontaneously and its borders and basement are more easily distinguishable. The latter can be flattened, like a bowl, crater or raised, comprising necrotised or granular tissue [see WHITE LESION/RED LESION]
